Event Details

The Chicago Gospel Music Heritage Museum, under the direction of Rev. Dr. Stanley Keeble, proudly presents A Birthday Celebration honoring the Legendary Gospel Queen, Mahalia Jackson! Born October 26, 1911, Mahalia Jackson is widely regarded as the greatest gospel singer ever to live. A major crossover success whose popularity extended across racial divides, she was gospel’s first superstar, and even decades after her death she remains, for many listeners, a defining symbol of gospel music’s transcendent power. With her singularly expressive contralto, Jackson continues to inspire the generations of vocalists who follow in her wake. Join us at Chicago’s Mahalia Jackson Elementary as we celebrate the life, legacy and music of Mahalia Jackson, with special tributes and performances by some of Chicago’s top gospel artists!

(Saturday) 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
